TESTING DOUBLE-WALL TANKS
HYDROSTATICALLY MONITORED
(WITH LIQUID FILLED ANNULAR SPACE)
This tank has a hydrostatic monitoring system that includes
a nontoxic colored monitoring fluid (30% calcium chloride)
between the tank walls.
In the unlikely event of a tank leak, this monitoring fluid will
leave a colored trace on the tank.
Reservoir Level Check:
M
♦ Remove the 4" plug from the reservoir fitting.
♦ Inspect for monitoring tracer fluid.
♦ See Section C1 and C3.
♦ if reservoir is completely empty, immediately call Con-
tainment Solutions Field Service.
Outer Wall Test
INSPECTION
Step 1
Closely inspect outer wall for any trace of colored moni-
toring tracer fluid.
NOTE: If a colored fluid is found on the tank surface
during any test, discontinue the installation and imme-
diately contact Containment Solutions Field Service..
BOTTOM INSPECTION
Step 1
Tighten all fitting plugs to the annular space and res-
ervoir to avoid spilling monitoring fluid.
Step 2
Inspect tank bottom by lifting tank using all lift lugs
provided on the tank.
Do not stand under tank while tank is in the air.
Injury or death could occur.
Step 3
After completing inspection of tank bottom, replace tank
on shipping pads or on smooth ground.
DO NOT
♦ Rotate tank.
PRESSURIZE TANK
Step 1
Connect air compressor line to primary tank fitting.
Step 2
A contractor supplied pressure relief valve must be
connected to the primary tank for additional protec-
tion. The relief valve should be sized and set to prevent
the tank from being pressurized in excess of the maxi-
mum allowed test pressure.
Step 3
Pressurize primary tank to 5 psi maximum.
DO NOT
♦ Attach air pressure line to any annular space fitting.
Do not lift tank with pressure on it. This could result
in personal injury.
VISUAL AIRISOAP TEST
Step 1
Apply a soapy water solution to all fittings and manways.
Step 2
Check for leaks as indicated by bubbles.
Step 3
If bubbles are present, tighten the plugs or bolts and
retest.
INNERWALLTEST
Step 1
Release pressure from primary tank.
Step 2
Remove enough tank fittings to see inside primary tank.
Step 3
With a light, look inside for any accumulation of moni-
toring tracer fluid.
NOTE: If a colored fluid is found on the tank surface
during any test, discontinue the installation and im-
mediately contact Containment Solutions Field Ser-
vice.
Step 4
Replace and tighten fitting plug(s).
Step 5
Loosen plug to vent annular space.
A4. HOLE SIZE
NOTE: If tanks are mechanically anchored, additional
minimum clearance is required between tanks (see sec-
tion A7).
STABLE EXCAVATIONS (FIGURE5)
CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
