MAY-21-96 16:38 FROM:WESTON NCA
113:51105037901
CONTINGENCY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN
CALIFORNIA PEP BOYS STORES
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This Contingency and Emergency Response Plan was written as a procedure for Pep Boys
employees to follow in the event of fires, explosions, or other unplanned sudden or non-
sudden releases(spill or leaking tank) of hazardous materials/waste occurring at Pep Boys
stores. This plan is required to satisfy California state hazardous waste and underground
storage tank regulations, specifically California Code of Regulations (CCR) 23-2632(d)(2)
(written response plan) and CCR 22-66262.34(a)(3) (hazardous waste contingency plan
and emergency procedures).
1.1 Responsibilities of the Store Manager
Store Managers are responsible for making sure that all employees are familiar with this
plan and understand how to implement it. Copies of this plan shall be kept by the Store
Manager in the environmental file and at all locations where spills, leaks, fires or
explosions could reasonably be expected to occur. These locations include the waste oil
underground storage tanks and hazardous waste accumulation areas. Store Managers are
also responsible for appointing Primary and Secondary Emergency Coordinators for each
store.
1.2 Emergency Coordinators
The Primary and Secondary Emergency Coordinators and their home addresses and phone
numbers for this store are listed in Table 1. The Emergency Coordinators are familiar with
the store, its operations, and the content of this plan. Each Emergency Coordinator has
the authority to implement this plan.
2.0 RELEASES (SPILLS AND LEAKS) OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS/
HAZARDOUS WASTE
2.1 Types of Releases
There are three events that have the potential to occur at Pep Boys stores that may be
considered an unauthorized release. These are as follows:
• A surface spill of hazardous material/waste such as virgin and used oil or antifreeze.
PEP BOYS.DOC 1 5/20/96
