If spill occurs inside store, the Emergency
Coordinator shall evacuate customers and any non-responding employees to the
evacuation area shown on Figure 1. Customers are free to leave the site, but
employees must stay in the evacuation area until they are told to return to work or go
home by the Emergency Coordinator. In the event of an emergency, customers are
not allowed to wander the site or interfere with the emergency response crews.
• Quickly determine the magnitude of the spill. If the Emergency Coordinator
determines that the release is uncontrollable with the equipment on hand or that
contamination outside the facility has occurred, he/she will contact the Environmental
Department Manager per the attached Emergency Notification List. As many counties
an informal polic that spills less than one gallon that do not present a hazard do not
need to be reported_ the Environmental Department Manager will only be called for
spills greater than one gallon.
• The Environmental Department Manager will contact the Environmental Cleanup
Contractor and is responsible for authorizing any work necessary under this plan.
• Identify the cause of the spill and contain spill with spill kit (if possible). Contain spill
so as to prevent flow to sewer or storm dram.
• Take appropriate measures to stop the spill(e.g., upright the container).
• Recover material (as much as possible) and arrange for proper disposal with the
Environmental Department Manager and Emergency Cleanup Contractor.
Recovered material should be placed in the overpack drum provided with the spill kit and
the drum should be labeled with a"Hazardous Waste" label. The label shall be completely
filled out, including the accumulation date (date of cleanup), store address, EPA ID
number, EPA and state waste codes, hazardous properties, and DOT shipping mane.
The overpack drum containing recovered material shall be kept in the hazardous wastes
accumulation area in the store toolroom until it is removed by the Environmental Cleanup
Contractor. As Pep Boys is only a generator, the drum will be taken offsite for treatment
and/or disposal at an appropriate hazardous waste facility within 90 days. Do not place
the recovered materials in the waste oil underground storage tank_
PEP-BOYs.DOC 4 5n0r96
