Prohibit employees from working on faces of sloped or benched excavation at levels
above other employees unless employees at lower levels are adequately protected from the
hazards of falling, rolling, or sliding material or equipment.
Prohibit employees under loads that are handled by lifting or digging equipment. To
avoid being struck by any spillage or falling materials, require employees to stand away from
vehicles being loaded or unloaded. If cabs of vehicles provide adequate protection from falling
loads during loading and unloading operations, the operators may remain in them.
3.33 EXPOSURE MONITORING AND AIR SAMPLING PLAN
An initial site reconnaissance will be performed prior to commencement of each
workday. Additionally, the site will be monitored under the supervision of the Site Safety
Officer during the initial phases of work operations and when conditions at the site change.
Equipment may include the following:
• Photo ionization detector(PID)
• Chemical specific Industrial Hygiene (integrated) sampling
• Heat stress
All monitoring equipment will be calibrated on a per use or daily basis unless specified
otherwise by the manufacturer. Maintenance, including factory maintenance, will be conducted
per the manufacturer's specifications. Calibration and maintenance operations will be recorded
in a log and be maintained on site with the equipment. The PID will be calibrated at the
beginning of each workday. The gas used to calibrate the PID is 100 ppm Isobutylene. A bound
logbook will be kept to record all field readings. A calibration will be run at the end of each day,
at minimum, to insure that readings are within 25% of the initial calibration at the beginning of
the day or prior calibration if the OVA is recalibrated more during the day. If the difference
between calibrations is greater than 25%, the reading taken between calibrations will be suspect.
39
