3.30 RECORD KEEPING <br /> Geofon will maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for all hazardous chemicals as long as <br /> the substance is found on site and for at least 30 years after departure from the site. <br /> 3.31 EXCAVATION SAFETY <br /> 3.31.1 Definition <br /> EXCAVATION - A man-made cavity or depression in the earth's surface, including its' <br /> sides, walls, or faces formed by the removal of materials, and producing unsupported earth <br /> conditions by reason of such removal. If installed forms or similar structures reduce the depth- <br /> to-width relationship, the excavation may become a trench. <br /> 3.32 OTHER HAZARDS <br /> 3.32.1 Falls and Equipment <br /> In addition to cave-in hazards and secondary hazards related.to cave-ins, there are other <br /> hazards from which workers must be protected during excavation-related work. These hazards <br /> include exposure to falls, falling loads, and mobile equipment. To protect employees from these <br /> hazards, the employee must take the following precautions: <br /> Keep materials or equipment that might fall or roll into an excavation at least 2 feet from <br /> the edge of excavations, or have retaining devices, or both. <br /> Provide warning systems such as mobile equipment, barricades, hand or mechanical <br /> signals, or stop logs, to alert operators of the edge of an excavation. <br /> Provide scaling to remove loose rock or soil or install protective barricades and other <br /> equivalent protection to protect employees against falling rock, soil or materials. <br /> 38 <br />
