06 July 1998
AGE Project No. 97-0381
Prior to removal of the fuel USTs, the tanks were triple rinsed by AGE, using a pressure washer
and alconox solution. Additionally, the UST which contained product transmission oil (fluid)
was triple rinsed by AGE, using a pressure washer and alconox solution. The liquid contents of
the waste oil UST was removed and an attempt was made to removed the solids from this UST.
Approximately 100-gallons of sludge and dirt were lodged in the UST and could not be removed.
Approximately 700 gallons of rinseate were transported under manifest to Americlean Inc. of
Silver Springs, Nevada (State Manifest Document No. 97338540) by Norcal Oil of Turlock,
California.
An inspector of the City of Stockton Fire Department was on hand to oversee the tank removal
activities. After being removed, the tanks were visually inspected and appeared to be intact, with
no holes or extensive corrosion noted. The three of the gasoline tanks were subsequently
transported to West Coast Equipment Company of Turlock for disposal. One of the small tanks
was scheduled to be removed in July and the UST with sludge is planned to be disposed of as
hazardous.
SOIL SAMPLING
Following removal of the tank, a backhoe was used to collect a soil sample from 2 feet below the
ends of the former USTs (Figure 2). Two samples were collected from each large UST and one
sample was collected from each small UST. One soil sample was collected from the area of the
former dispenser. Soil samples were collected from each of the soil stockpiles. Each soil sample
was collected with metric soil sampling hammer, loaded with a pre-cleaned brass sleeve. The
ends of the brass sleeves were sealed with a Teflon plastic and end caps were tapped over the
ends of each sample sleeve.
Samples were collected by a representative of Precision Enviro-Tech of Stockton, California, a
state-certified analytical laboratory. The samples were labeled and placed in a chilled container
for subsequent transport. The date and time soil samples were taken were noted on the chain-of-
custody form included with the attached laboratory report and quality control data.
The samples associated with the gasoline USTs, dispenser and the soil spoils pile were analyzed
for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g), purgeable aromatics (benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes: BTE&X) and lead in accordance with EPA methods
8015-modified for gasoline and 8020 for BTE&X and EPA methods 7421 for lead, for the
oxygenating fuel additives tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (RIPE), ethyl tertiary
butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) in accordance with EPA method
8260b.
