Diesel: Suspected human carcinogen. A TLV of approximately 1,000 ppm has
been assigned to diesel. This value of 1,000 ppm was assigned based on an
average of less than 1 percent benzene in diesel. Low level inhalation exposure
to diesel can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and respiratory system; headache;
and nausea.
Benzene: Suspected human carcinogen. A TLV of 10 ppm or 30 mg/m3 has been
assigned to benzene. Benzene has a low odor threshold limit of 1.4 ppm. Low
level inhalation exposure to benzene can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and
respiratory system; headache; and nausea.
Toluene: A TLV of 100 ppm or 375 mg/m3 has been assigned to toluene. Toluene
has a low odor threshold limit of 2.1 ppm. Low level inhalation exposure to toluene
can cause fatigue, weakness, confusion and euphoria.
Ethyl benzene: A TLV of 100 ppm or 435 mg/m3 has been assigned to ethyl
benzene. Ethyl benzene has a low odor threshold limit of 2.0 ppm. Low level
inhalation exposure to ethyl benzene can cause irritation to the eyes and mucous
membranes.
Xylene: A TLV of 100 ppm or 435 mg/m3 has been assigned to xylene. Xylene has
a low odor threshold limit of 2.0 ppm. Low level inhalation exposure to xylene can
cause dizziness, excitement, and drowsiness.
6.2 Potential Physical Hazards
The Bonsall Petroleum SHSC will inspect the site before work begins and
periodically throughout the course of the job to identify and safeguard against any
potential physical hazards. To minimize the exposure of personnel to these
hazards, only authorized persons will be allowed on the job site.
Physical hazards which may be present during the excavation and removal of
underground storage tanks and lines include the following:
Noise: The equipment used to excavate and remove underground storage tanks
produces elevated levels of noise. To minimize the risks associated with high noise
levels, field personnel will wear acoustic earmuffs or earplugs when necessary.
Dust: The equipment used to excavate and remove underground storage tanks
and lines may include significant amounts of dust into the surrounding air. Should
dust pose a hazard, toxic masks will be worn by field personnel.
Utility Lines: Both above ground and below ground utility lines pose potential
safety hazards to personnel and equipment. All equipment utilizing masts or booms
must maintain at least 10 feet of clearance from overhead lines. The presence of
