underground utilities are also of concern, and Underground Service Alert will be
notified in advance of any work to identify all underground utilities in the immediate
area.
Heat: Heat stress will be monitored by each individual and controlled through
regular work breaks as outlined in the American Conference of Governmental
Hygienists' TLV's for heat stress conditions.
Excavation/Trenches: The tank excavation and product line trenches expose
personnel to risks of injury associated with tripping and falling. All non-essential
personnel should be directed to stay clear of the excavation and product line
trenches.
Equipment: Personnel other than the operator and his leapers are to stay clear of
machinery and equipment involved in the excavation and removal of underground
storage tanks and lines. It is the responsibility of the operator(s) to ensure that all
equipment is in good and operable condition. In the event of an equipment
malfunction, operations will cease until the equipment is repaired.
7.0 SITE SAFETY AND HEALTH PROCEDURES
7.1 Site Security and Entry
The property owner and/or manager of the subject site will have the overall
responsibility of the site security during all periods of ongoing site activities.
Access to work areas for field personnel and visitors will be controlled by the SHSC.
7.2 Work Zones
The SHSC will designate an exclusion zone, decontamination zone, and support
zone on-site.
Exclusion Zone: The exclusion zone is the innermost of three concentric areas and
is the zone where contamination is known to or could occur. All personnel entering
the exclusion zone will wear the prescribed level of protection for the specific site.
Check point for entry and exit will be established at the periphery f the zone to
regulate the flow of personnel and equipment into and out of the zone and to verify
that established entry and exit procedures are followed. The boundary of the zone
will be determined by the area necessary to conduct the tank removal and the
potential for contaminants to be blown or splashed from the site activity. When this
boundary is determined, it will be marked; and then only individuals approved by
the SHSC can enter this zone. During subsequent site operations, the boundary
may be modified/adjusted as additional information becomes available.
Decontamination Zone: an equipment decontamination zone area must be
