be taken with a driven-tube type sampler, capped and
sealed with inert materials (see below) to minimize
loss of volatiles. In instances where samples cannot
be safely obtained using the above procedures, the
following alternative method my be used. Immediately
upon tank removal , a backhoe bucket will rapidly bring
the soil to the surface. Once the soil has been
brought to the surface, the technician shall quickly
scrape off the top three inches of soil and the soil
tube shall be driven into the soil by a suitable device
such that no headspace is present anywhere in the tube.
All piping must be removed and soil samples taken
every 20 lineal feet. Soil samples from under piping
will be collected in soil cylinders and treated as
described below. In instances where samples are to be
taken at a soil/water interface, the driven-tube type
sampler will be used. After the sample has been taken,
aluminum foil will be placed around each end of the
soil cylinder, capped with polyethylene lids, taped,
labeled and placed into an ice chest containing dry ice
and kept frozen until their delivery to the laboratory.
In instances where the above procedure is inappropriate
- i. e. semi-solid samples - glass containers with
teflon seals & screw caps should be used. Maintain
samples in glass containers at 4 Deg. C with blue ice
to avoid breaking.
a. shipping - If shipping with dry ice presents
Department of Transportation problems, Blue
Ice may have to be substituted.
D. Water Samples - If water is present in the tank pit,
soil and water samples will be taken. The soil samples
will be taken by the methods described above (soil &
water interface) , at the tank ends. Before sampling,
the water shall be observed for signs of floating
product, and the technician shall record these
observations in the field notebook. The pit may be
pumped out and allowed to refill before sampling.
Water pumped out of the pit shall be handled correctly
- i. e. stored in drums or pumper truck for disposal .
This water is not to be discharged into a storm drain
without prior approval from the Regional Board.
Water samples are to be taken which are representative
of the water in the pit. Usually one sample is enough,
but more samples may be necessary to accurately
characterize the water. Samples may be taken at the
edge of the pit in one of two ways ; 1) manually by
holding a suitable glass container (prepared by the
lab) under the surface 12 to 18 inches (a surface '
sample may also be required) , or preferably 2 ) by using
2
