SIPHON DAM
A filter fence is also a confinement option for water discharges
involving oil. Generally, this type of fencing is difficult to set up.
Items which may be used to construct a filter fence include chicken wire
or any type of wire fencing. Straw or hay may also be used. However, a
great deal of saturated material is generated as a result of using straw
or hay which can be costly to dispose. Filter fences are typically used
on faster running streams, and are only partially successful in removing
oily contaminants.
If the material spilled is soluble, there is very little that the first
responder can do. If the waterway is small, the responder may install a
dam which will help to recover or filter the water. The other option is
to neutralize the chemical, rendering it inert. This will require the
resources of the EPA and/or State environmental agency for technical
assistance.
SITE SPILL CONTROL PLAN:
A copy of this plan shall remain at the command post for the duration of
the project. All employees and site visitors shall be made aware of
this plan and any responsibilities they may have for spill control.
SPILL RESPONSE EQUIPMENT:
A site spill control equipment area shall be staged at the Command Post
The equipment required for spill control shall be:
1. Sand, clean fill or other non-combustible absorbent
2. Absorbent booms
3. 10 lb ABC Fire Extinguisher
4. Plastic, non-sparking shovels
5. Caution tape and duct tape
6. Box of disposable towels
7. Plastic Disposal bags (6-mil) and 6-mil plastic sheeting
8 Plastic Dust pan and stiff bristled brush
61
Site Safety & Health Plan Rev. /1. 0
October 20, 1997
