i
The borings were drilled by representatives of Woodward Drilling (C-57 license #581639) on
October 13, 1993. All drilling was performed with a steam cleaned, 8 inch O.D. hollow stem
auger. The field geologist determined the depth of each borehole and any special procedures
necessary to manage any unusual or anomalous conditions (i.e., flowing sands). Boreholes
were dulled to approximately 40 feet below grade.
2.2 Soll Sampling
All subsurface materials were described using the visual method of the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS) as described in United States Bureau of Reclamation document
No. 5005-86. Samples were collected utilizing a split spoon sampler advanced using a 140
lb. hammer. The sampler contained brass tubes for collection of undisturbed samples. The
' sampler and brass tubes were decontaminated by scrubbing with a non-phosphate detergent,
triple rinsed with tap water, rinsed with hexane followed by a distilled water rinse. Soil
samples were collected every five feet. Select vadose zone soil samples were submitted for
laboratory analysis (borehole 1 at 5, 15, 25, and 35 feet and borehole 2 at 10, 20, 30, and 40
feet) in order to provide a vertical hydrocarbon distribution profile.
Each soil sample retained for analysis was described, checked for the presence of
hydrocarbons, and promptly sealed with aluminum foil, plastic end caps and tape. The
' samples were then placed in a "ziploc" bag, sealed with security tape and stored in an ice
chest with water ice until delivery to the on site laboratory. Cham-0f-custody records were
maintained for all samples and are included as Appendix B.
The samples were analyzed utilizing the methods and detection limits shown below:
ANALYSIS NAME METHOD DETECTION
' LDAIT
(ppm)
BTEX EPA modified 8020
(benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, total xylenes) 0.005
' TPH as diesel DHS GC-FID modified 8015 10
NOTE: TPH = Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons
MZ/12-D8-93/ENG/93-1065.nbr
3
