ARCO Marketing Operations Construction Safety Policy
• eye and face protection 29 CFR 1926.102
• body protection
• hand protection
• foot protection 29 CFR 1926.96
note: Hazardous waste operations and emergency response workers have a much more
detailed list of requirements. For details see 29 CFR 1926.65.
ARCO may supersede OSHA guidelines in that hard-hats and eye-protection must be
worn in all construction environments.
I. Respiratory Protection - 29 CFR 1926.103
It is common for an worker to recognize an airborne exposure to a material and provide a
respirator to protect the worker. What is not often recognized are the steps required to use
respiratory protection properly and in compliance with OSHA regulations. A Respiratory
Protection Program will have the following elements:
• education and training
• maintenance and sanitation
• written operating procedures
• selection and issuance of respirators
• program surveillance and evaluation
• medical limitations
J. Medical Surveillance - 29 CFR 1926.103
For operations which require the use of respiratory protection or which involve exposure or
potential exposure to hazardous materials medical surveillance may be required.
The reason medical surveillance is required is because the use of respiratory protection
equipment and exposure to hazardous materials increases physiological stress to a worker. It
is more difficult to breath wearing a respirator. A potentially toxic exposure to an individual in
compromised health could have a deleterious effect whereas a healthy person would not be
affected.
Medical surveillance attempts to identify medical risk factors which would be relevant to an
employee's work responsibilities, describe medical limitations and identify medical problems
early for more effective treatment. Specific elements of a workplace medical surveillance
program will be determined by the consulting physician.
Common elements include:
• medical history
5
