E
E
10
Uses & Applications
The flexible supply piping is available in 1-1/2" and 2" diameters. The piping
system is designed specifically for the transfer of liquids from underground
storage tanks to above ground product dispensers. For other types of
applications of GeoFlex 18 11, such as above ground applications and
marinas, contact your local Environ distributor about warranty coverage.
The product fluids transferred should not exceed an operating pressure of 75
psi and a temperature of 150'F (66'C). All installation practices shall comply
with the installation instructions contained within this and other Environ
product manuals.
Certified Installers
It is required that only "Certified Installers' be used for installation of the
GeoFlex Piping System to Insure that proper pipe fabrication, coupling and
installation is performed. "Certified Installers' are equipped with factory
manufactured coupling equipment and installation tools and have received
factory training by an Environ representative on the proper Installation and
testing procedures.
Design: The contractor shall provide a secondarily contained underground
liquid distribution system which shall be of such a design that all piping
is flexible and all piping joints are located Inside surface access
containment chambers. All dispensing pumps, dispensing meters and their
associated plumbing connections shall be equipped with a containment
chamber to prevent any leaking product from escaping into the
environment. Any leak In the primary supply or secondary containment
system shall be direct to a point of automatic leak detection.
Product Compatibility: All components of the secondarily contained
underground liquid distribution system shall be chemically compatible with
the products to be distributed and with chemicals found naturally in the
ground environment.
Corrosion Resistance: All components of secondarily contained
underground liquid distribution system which come In contact with the
ground environment shall be made of non-metallic material or protected by
materials which prevent corrosion.
Structural Integrity: All components of the secondarily contained
underground liquid distribution system shall be designed ano cpnstructed of
materials strong enough for its intended use.
• Tank Containment Chambers Shall not collapse, crack or break due to
ground movement, lank movement or from backfill and high ground water
pressures.
• Dispenser Containment Chambers. Shall not collapse, crack or break
due to ground movement or from backfill and high ground water pressures.
• Flexible Piping: Ultimate strength of pipe shall be a minimum of 6 times
the rated pressure to allow for momentary fluid pulses (fluid hammer)
resulting from intermittent operation of the pump or dispenser nozzle, and
an external load strength so as not to collapse under ground load and
suction pressures.
Pipe & Conduit Entries: All containment chambers shall be fitted with
pipe and conduit entry seals which are semi -absorbent to ground movement
and sufficiently flexible enough to permit angled entries up to 30 degrees
without leaking under liquid head pressures of up to six feet (Ism). No
metallic components shall be exposed to the ground.
Liquid Tightness: All containment chambers shall prevent outside surface
and ground water from coming in and prevent any leaking product
originating within from escaping into the environment.
• Tank Containment Chambers: Shall have water -tight covers, pipe and
conduit entry seals and tank connections capable of withstanding six feet
(1.8m) of liquid head pressure.
• Dispenser Containment Chambers: Shall have water -tight pipe and
conduit entry seals capable of withstanding six feet (1.8m) of liquid head
pressure and.a raised upper perimeter capable of keeping out one inch
(25mm) of surface water.
Height Adjustability: All contaimnent chambers shall be field height
adjustable to accommodate different tank and piping burial depths.
101
Pre -Installation Planning
Prior to installation, this product manual should be read so its contents can be
Included In the piping design specifications and site engineering plan.
Environ offers additional engineering drawings not included in this product
manual which may be of further assistance. The GeoFlex Piping System Is
radically different than conventional rigid piping systems and therefore may
require special approvals from local regulatory agencies. Contact your local
Environ distributor or Environ directly for assistance with these approvals.
Environ offers a detailed price list containing detailed information for easier
ordering of Environ products. Cross reference the information in this product
manual with the price list when ordering GeoFlex Piping components.
WARRANTY COVERAGE
It is important to read this manual completely, paying close
attenton to highlighted boxes, in order for warranty to apply.
Anchoring & Stabilization: The dispenser containment chambers shall
provide a means of securing the above -ground dispenser unit, shear valve
and Piping.- Anchoring: The dispenser containment chamber shall provide a
metal framework including concrete secured anchor bolts of such a design
that the base frame of the dispenser is mounted directly over the concrete
slab and not cantilevered.
• Shear Valve Stabilization: The dispenser containment chamber shall
provide a metal framework Including one or more fully adjustable stabilizer
bars to securely attach a shear valve in such a manner that the valve will
properly activate in the event of a dispenser knock -over. This assembly
should meet the minimum testing requirements of the California Shear Valve
Stabilization Test.
Flexible Piping Specifications: The flexible underground piping shall have
the following design characteristics: Ir
• Bend Radius: Both the primary inner and secondary outer pipe shall be
capable of an 18 inch (450mm) bend radius without kinking, cracking or
breaking.
• Permeability: The primary supply piping shall be impermeable (less than
1 k weight loss over a 180 day period) to the liquids to be transferred.
• Fluid Flow Efficiency: Both the primary inner and secondary outer pipe
shall have an interior surface which is a smooth (non -corrugated) profile and
be made of a low friction resistant material for Improved fluid flow efficiency.
• Operating Pressure: For pressure piping systems the primary supply pipe
shall have a maximum operating pressure of at least 2-1/2 times that of the
.pump's normal operating pressure.
• Pipe Expansion: The primary supply pipe shall not expand more than
.0025% in diameter and overall length when pressurized to 60 psi to permit
accurate pressure decay readings by an In-line leak detector.
• Interstitial Interconnection: All primary and secondary piping shall be
connected in such a way as to permit Integrity testing of both during
installation, as well as at periodic intervals in the future. Both primary and
secondary piping shall remain continuous during operation.
Integrity Testing: The liquid distribution system shall provide a means of
performing a containment integrity test before and after final installation.
• Primary Line Testing: The primary piping line shall be capable of
maintaining air pressure at 60 psi until backfill is complete.
• Secondary Line Testing: The interstitial space shall be capable of
maintaining air pressure at 10 psi until backfill is complete.
Leak Detection: All containment chambers and piping shall be equipped
with a means of sensing a leak anywhere in the underground piping system.
• Containment Chambers: A leak detection sensor shall be installed in all
dispenser containment chambers which will activate with less than 1/8'
(3mm) of gasoline or in 10 inches (250mm) of water.
• Flexible Piping: The interstitial space of the flexible pipe line shall be filled
with an environmentally safe anti -freeze solution and interconnected to a
liquid level monitor capable of turning off a pump if a change in liquid level
occurs.
