). H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES
1]
File: W-2028-1/13:340
July 14, 1986
Page 2
o The collection of one soil sample from each boring at
approximately five feet below the tank bottom.
o The chemical analysis of the soil samples for total
hydrocarbons.
1
IV. FIELD ACTIVITIES
' A. Soil Boring
' Boring B-1 was drilled 14 feet north of the center of the
tank at an angle of 46 degrees from horizontal. Boring B-2
was drilled 14 feet south of the center of the tank at an
' angle of 44 degrees. The approximate locations of the soil
sample borings are shown on Plate No. 2.
During the drilling activity, a JHK&A geologist
classified the subsurface soils, collected soil samples, and
logged the boreholes. Descriptions of the soil encountered
are presented on Plate Nos. 4 and 5 with a copy of the
' Unified Soils Classification System (used to identify the
soil) included as Plate No. 3. The soils encountered in
boreholes B-1 and B-2 consisted of silt and sand. No free
' water was encountered during the drilling. Upon completion
of the drilling and soil sampling, the boreholes were
backfilled to the surface with a bentonite cement grout.
B. Soil S am pling Procedure
Soil samples were collected at the bottom of each
boring beneath the weed oil tank. The sampling intervals
are shown on Plates Nos. 4 and 5. Soil samples were
collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately
' above the sampling depth and then driving a Modified
California Sampler lined with three brass tubes into the
undisturbed soil. The sampler was removed from the bottom
Two soil borings were drilled on June 20,
1986.
The
t
borings were drilled using a truck -mounted Mobile
B-40
drill
rig equipped with 6 -inch hollow stem augers.
'
The borings were started on a vacant lot on
the
east
side of the tank and angled back toward the tank.
The
weed
oil tank is 38 feet long and has a diameter of
7.5
feet.
' Boring B-1 was drilled 14 feet north of the center of the
tank at an angle of 46 degrees from horizontal.
