Phase 11 Hazardous Materials Study for the Lodi Rail/Multimodal Station July 24, 1997
to Wilbur Smith Associates Project No. E168
Field Investigation
' Electromagnetic/Magnetic Survey
A geophysical investigation of the subject site was conducted on September 13 and 14, 1996 by WZI
Inc. The geophysical investigation consisted of a magnetic/electromagnetic survey using a
magnetometer system, a ground conductivity system, and a pipe and cable locator. A discussion of
investigation methods and findings is included in the Ground Geophysical Survey report by WZI
which included in Appendix III of this report.
Summary of Geophysical Survey Findings
' The results of the survey clearly delineated numerous geophysical anomalies within the site. Most
of the anomalies are associated with known surface and/or subsurface objects such as pipelines,
' buildings, cars, and other cultural objects. However, a number of the anomalies do not appear to be
directly attributable to known objects. These features were explored further during our field study
which included drilling, trenching, and sampling at various locations within the site.
iDrilling, Trenching and Sampling
' Soil excavation, drilling, and sampling was completed at the approximate locations shown on Figures
2 and 2a and proposed in the site Workplan and Health and Safety Plan which is attached as
Appendix IV. A total of 12 augured borings and 14 shallow backhoe trenches were completed for
' the site evaluation. The approximate boring and trench depths are listed below. The Logs of the
Borings and Trenches are attached as Appendix I of this report and should be referenced for
conditions encountered at any particular location.
' Boring No. Depth ft Trench No. Depth (ft)
BI 16 Tl & IA 4.5
B2 16 T2 & 2A 4.5
B3 6 T3 4.5
' B4 16.5 T4 2
B5 16.5 T5 3
B6 11 T6 Not Excavated
' B7 16.5 T7 4
B8 21.5 T8 5
B9 16.5 T9 2
'
1310 16.5 T10 4.5
Bll 21.5 Tll 4.5
B12 21.5 T12 & 12A 2to3.5
Augured borings were drilled using 8-inch diameter hollow-stem augers. Driven soil samples were
obtained at approximate intervals of 5 feet unless observations (such as changing soil conditions)
' suggest different intervals. Borings were backfilled with a cement-bentonite grout. Drilling spoils
were placed in steel 55-gallon drums, labeled, capped, and stored on a remote portion of the site. The
augers were rinsed with a steam cleaner and/or alconox solution after completion of each boring.
3
ESPANA GEOTECHNICAL CONSULTING
