8.
3.3. 1 Chemical Exposure Hazards
The tank located at the Lodi facility contained regular gasoline. The
most hazardous chemical constituents pertaining to fuel products are
benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylene dibromide (EDB) . Benzene and EBB
are considered to be carcinogenic to humans. The volatile nature of fuel
' products presents a potential exposure via inhalation. Possible direct
contact with contaminated soils or product residues in the tank represent a
potential dermal exposure route. The risks associated with these materials
and the measures to be undertaken to minimize those risks are discussed in
Section 3.4.
3,3.2 Physical Hazards
The primary physical hazards posed by the field programs are associated
with working in the vicinity of heavy construction equipment (e.g.
excavation equipment, etc. ) . Hard hats, ear plugs, and steel toed boots
will be required for all personnel working around such equipment. In
addition, heat from high ambient temperatures, protective clothing, a heavy
physical workload and/or a combination of these factors can result in heat
stress. The following procedures will be followed to reduce the potential
' for heat stress:
o Training will be conducted to familiarize individuals with heat
stress symptoms. Employees will notify the health and safety
officer of any symptoms encountered.
o Work-rest cycles will be implemented allowing employees to
periodically remove protective clothing and cool down. Breaks will
be scheduled on a regular basis.
o Liquids will be available on-site to replenish body fluids.
3.4 Risk Assessment Summary
1
The specific job function and associated work to be performed at the site
' has been established as follows:
CanOriieEnvironrnental
1
