In the event
concentrations of hydrocarbon vapors measured in the breathing zone exceed 10 parts per million
(the threshold limit value for benzene), work will be suspended and the site evacuated until
engineering controls can be implemented to reduce the hazard. Respiratory equipment will available
on-site and but will only be used if high levels of hydrocarbon vapors are detected and it is necessary
to secure equipment prior to evacuating the site.
B-5 Personal Protective Equipment: It is anticipated that the level of personal protection required
for this project will be U.S. EPA Level D or modified Level C. Personal protection will only be
modified to Level C in the event it is necessary for emergency evacuation of the site. Personal
protective equipment for each member of the field team will be available on-site and used as may
be required by field conditions. A summary of the personal protective equipment is as follows:
• Full or half face respirators equipped with organic vapor cartridges;
• Appropriate work clothing and/or Tyvek® coveralls;
• Neoprene rubber gloves;
• Steel-toed leather work boots or steel-toed rubber boots;
• Safety glasses; and
• Hardhats.
Hardhats will be worn at all times. The sleeves of the coveralls shall be outside of the cuffs of the gloves to facilitate
removal of clothing. If at any time protective clothing(coverall,boots or gloves)becomes tom,wet,
or excessively soiled, they will be replaced immediately.
No eating, drinking or smoking will be allowed in the vicinity of the operations. The project
geologist will designate a separate area on-site for eating and drinking. Smoking will not be allowed
at the facility except in designated areas. No contact lenses will be worn by field personnel.
B-6 Cleanup/Decontamination Procedures: At the end of the workday,the following procedures
will be used to allow for the safe removal and decontamination of personal protective equipment that
may have been required.
• Boots and gloves will be washed with a Alconox® detergent and tap water, then rinsed
before removal.
