30 May 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0372
5.2. SOIL SAMPLING
As stated above, AGE intends to advance the soil borings utilizing a truck-mounted Geoprobe 5400
soil sampling machine in accessible areas and to advance soil borings utilizing a hand-auger in areas
inaccessible to the geoprobe. Areas inside the building that are not accessible by the van-mounted
Geoprobe will be addressed with a Power Probe remote probing unit that is powered by the
Geoprobe hydraulic system and can reach 70 to 100 feet from the van. The Power Probe unit is
bolted to the concrete floor over the desired probing position, and the probe boring is advanced
utilizing the same technology of the Geoprobe unit.
The geoprobe advances borings utilizing direct push technology and does not generate soil cuttings
that will require containerization and disposal. The pushing force is generated through hydraulic
pushing and mechanical hammering. The geoprobe advances a nominal 2-inch diameter boring by
pushing a 2-inch diameter soil sampler on the end of 1.25-inch diameter steel rods. The soil sampler
is loaded with four 6-inch long brass sleeves having a 1.125-inch diameter. For the continuous
boring, a 2-inch diameter, 4-foot length acetate sleeve will be utilized in a larger soil sampler.
The geoprobe can be utilized to cut holes in the concrete or asphalt prior to advancing each boring.
Upon cutting through the paving material, the cutting tool is replaced with the brass-sleeve-loaded
soil sampler and is advanced to the first soil sampling depth.
Hand-auger borings, if needed, will be advanced through precut holes in the concrete flooring
utilizing a common hand auger assembly. Upon reaching the desired sampling depth, a soil sample
will be collected utilizing a hammer-driven metric soil sampler loaded with one 2-inch by 6-inch
brass sleeve or two 2-inch by 3-inch brass sleeves.
Upon recovering the soil-filled brass-sleeves, the leading brass sleeve will be preserved by covering
the open ends with a sheet of Teflon, capping, and sealing with duct tape. Labels with the boring
designation, sampling depth, sampling date and time, and the sampler's initials will be put on each
collected. The properly preserved samples will be recorded on a chain-of-custody and will be stored
in a chilled container pending shipment to a California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified analytical laboratory for analysis.
5.3. GROUND WATER SAMPLING
An attempt to collect ground water samples will be made in two areas; the area where low pH and
elevated copper concentrations have been encountered near boring B7 and in the boring to be
advanced near the municipal water well. In addition, the municipal well will be sampled.
Advanced Geo Environ mental,Inc
