30 May 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0372
Ground water samples will be collected from two probe borings utilizing a Geoprobe water sampling
assembly. The sampling assembly will consist of probe rods fitted with a retractable PVA ground
water screen and will be advanced to the total depth of the probe boring. The rods will then be pulled
upward to expose the screen section and to allow ground water to flow into the screen. Water
accumulating in the screen casing will be sampled utilizing a bailer constructed of a bailer fitting on
the end of 3/e-inch diameter polyethylene tubing, which will be inserted into the exposed screen,
through which water will be manually pumped. The ground water sample will be collected into three
EPA-approved 40-m1 VOA vials containing 0.5 ml 18% HCl as a sample preservative and into a
1-liter plastic container lacking a preservative. The chain-of-custody and sample label will note that
the 1-liter sample does not contain a preservative.
California Water Service Company will purge the inactive municipal water well on the adjacent
property by pumping the well and discharging the produced water into the storm water drainage
system. Upon completion of the purge, a water sample will be collected from a sampling port on the
discharge line. Water samples will be collected into three EPA-approved 40-m1 VOA vials and into
one 1-liter plastic container as described in the paragraph above.
All ground water sample containers will be labeled with the boring designation, date and time of
sampling, and the sampler's initials. The properly labeled samples will be stored in a chilled
container pending shipment to a DHS-approved analytical laboratory.
5.4. SHIPMENT OF SAMPLES
All samples will be recorded on a chain-of-custody form with sample identification, sampling data
and time, and sampler's name. Desired analyses will be indicated on the chain-of-custody.
Properly preserved and labeled soil samples will be sealed in plastic bags and placed on the bottom
of a plastic ice-chest. The samples will be covered with chilled"blue-ice"or ice-cubes and the chain-
of-custody form, also sealed in a plastic bag. The chest will be filled with material to prevent
unnecessary movement and possible marring of the sample containers. The chest will be sealed and
delivered directly to a DHS-certified laboratory or will be shipped via an overnight delivery service.
If a Saturday delivery is necessary, the laboratory will be notified so that an employee of the
laboratory will be present to accept the shipped samples and properly care for the samples.
The ground water samples will be recorded on a chain-of-custody form as described above for soil
samples. The containers will be wrapped in paper towels and sealed in plastic bags. The packaged
containers will be placed in a chilled ice-chest with the chain-of-custody form, which will also be
sealed in a plastic bag. The chest will be filled with material to prevent unnecessary movement and
possible marring or breaking of the sample containers. The sealed chest will be delivered directly
Admnced Geo Environmental,Inc
