• RECEIVED
JUL 31 2015
Universal Waste Aerosol Cans Operating Procedure ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Facility Name: J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. PERMIT/SERVICES
Facility Address: 2660/2710 Loomis Road, Stockton, CA 95205
Section 1: Handling Universal Waste Aerosol Cans
Aerosol cans are not hazardous waste when they have been emptied of their contents. Once
empty, aerosol cans can be disposed of as solid waste(put them in the trash) or recycle them as
scrap metal.
Non-empty aerosol cans may be hazardous wastes depending upon their content. The
manufacture's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)will indicate if the aerosol can's product or
propellant are hazardous. Today most aerosol cans use a hydrocarbon propellant, which are very
flammable. Non-empty aerosol cans are typically discarded when:the spray mechanism no longer
works;the propellant is exhausted;the owner decides that they no longer want the product.
If the aerosol can contains pressurized contents that may explode when heated, if the propellant is
ignitable or toxic, or if the product itself is ignitable, corrosive, or toxic, then the non-empty
aerosol can is a hazardous waste.
Universal waste aerosol cans(un-emptied) can be accumulated on site for up to one year prior to
their processing or sending off site for disposal. Manage the universal waste aerosol cans in a
manner and in equipment designed to prevent fire, explosion, and unauthorized releases to the
environment.
Section 2: Storing Universal Waste Aerosol Cans
Accumulate and transport universal waste aerosol cans in containers that are structurally sound,
and compatible with the contents of the can, and show no evidence of leaks, spills, or damage that
could cause leaks. Universal waste aerosol cans and waste drained from them will be stored in
Packaging Group I, Steel Drums.
Prior to universal waste aerosol can storage and processing, evaluate the cans' product and
propellant contents for compatibility and suitability for commingling (see Tables 1-1 thru 1-5 in
Aerosolv Model 28222 Aerosol Can Recycling System manual). Assessment of this facility's
typical monthly generation of universal waste aerosol cans found that they typically consist of the
following products: paints; lubricants; adhesives;halocarbon solvents;and alkaline cleaners. The
alkaline cleaners are not compatible with the paints, lubricants, adhesives and halocarbon solvents;
therefore these two groups require separate storage for both their universal waste aerosol cans
and emptied can contents. Note that J.B. Hunt Transport typically does not store universal waste
aerosol cans on site. The universal waste aerosol cans are typically processed in the recycling
system when their use is completed.
