RECEIVED
JUL 31 20io`
(when contents reach within 10" from the top for 55-gallon drums&MBORMOd.HEALTH
top for 30-gallon drums). PERMIT/SERVICES
6. Always use the top sealing knob to engage the sliding top plate firmly against the
can being punctured.
7. Always operate the recycling system to a well ventilated area(fugitive escaping
propellants are heavier than air and may collect at the point of generation).
8. Do not use the recycling system to process aerosol cans containing pesticides,
herbicides, or corrosive materials (with pHs less than 2.0 or greater than 12.5).
D. Operating Recycling System
The recycling system is ready for use after following the installation, characterization and
segregation, and safety instructions described above in Section 3. Steps to operating the recycling
system are as follows:
1. Confirm that the receiving drum has sufficient remaining volume to receive more
product. Remaining volume greater than 10" from the top for 55-gallon drums and
8" from the top for 30-gallon drums.
2. Insert an inverted universal waste aerosol (nozzle end down) can into the recycling
system's sleeve housing, so that the shoulder of the can rests on the internal
gasket. Remove cap from aerosol can prior to insertion.
3. Lower the sliding top plate over the aerosol can's bottom. Tighten the lock knob
on the side of the housing. Tighten the seal knob on top of the sliding top plate.
4. Press down the handle, which mechanically raises a carbide-tipped puncture pin to
pierce into the dome of the can. The can's contents are immediately dispersed to
the receiving drum(it takes about 20 seconds). The particulate laden propellant is
coalesced in the first stage of combination filter(located on the drum top's 3/4"
diameter hole). The combination filter provides unrestricted propellant flow
through the carbon cartridge.
5. After aerosol cans contents are discharged, turn the sealing knob counter-
clockwise three rotations. Unfasten the side lock knob. Remove the sliding top
plate. Lift the can to the brim of the housing. Some residual fluid may be
entrapped between the lip of the can and the hole created by the puncturing pin.
Tip the can to allow the residual to discharge into the sleeve housing. A rag may
be used to remove any remaining residual from around the can. Remove the can
from the housing and lower the sliding top plate to cover the sleeve housing, which
seals the collection drum.
6. Continuously monitor the colormetric indicator on the combined filter, to
determine when the carbon canister is approaching saturation. If the carbon
canister is saturated, stop use of the recycling system and replace the carbon
canister. The saturated carbon canisters can be discarded as solid waste.
7. The processed aerosol can may be discard as solid waste or recyclable metal.
8. When the recycling system is not in use, the system should be locked to prevent
unauthorized use. A pad lock can be inserted in the hole located on the slide bar.
