Jim Walsh
tockton Scavenger Association
240 Navy Drive
tockton, California 95206
Re: Preliminary Soil Sampling
and Analysis Plan
Pear Jim:
EMCON Associates has prepared a preliminary soil sampling and analysis plan
for the storm-water collection pond and drainage channel at Stockton
Scavenger Association , 1240 Navy Drive (see Figure 1) . This preliminary
flan was developed in response to comments on the July 15 , 1988 EMCON soil
ampling and analysis plan by David Carls of the San Joaquin Local Health
istrict.
he July 15 , 1988 plan included collecting soil samples at three depths at
3 locations and analyzing at least 16 composite samples and 10 discrete
amples for high boiling point hydrocarbons as oil and diesel . Oil and
iesel are the most likely pond contaminants. Some samples were also to be
analyzed for gasoline, benzene , toluene, and xylenes and ethylbenzene to
ssess whether these contaminants were present.
n August 11 , 1988 Mr . Carls stated that sample compositing will not be
llowed and that samples must be analyzed separately for the following
arameters:
o Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gas or diesel
o Oil and grease
o Benzene, toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene
e Chlorinated hydrocarbons
• Semivolatile organics including polychlorinated biphenyls , pen-
tachlorophenol , polynuclear aromatic compounds, and creosote
• Cadmium, chromium, lead, and zinc
this broad spectrum of analyses would be very expensive if we analyze the
number of samples suggested in the original plan .
