OCT 1 G 1989
^ , 0 METHODS
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
1. 1 sail Samolinct PERIVIMSERVICES
Soil sampling will be performed under the direction of an Aegis
engineer or geologist. Soil samples will be collected as per San
Joaquin County Guidelines. soils will be collected from the
bottom of the tank excavation by excavation equipment. Soils will
be collected from the excavator by use of a hand sampler with
brass sampling tubes. No personnel will enter the excavation.
To reduce the possibility of cross-contamination between sampling
points, all sampling equipment will be washed in a soap solution
and double-rinsed between each sampling point.
Upon recovery, a portion of the sail sample will be placed into a
glass jar and sealed for later screening with a photoionization
detector. Another portion of the soil sample will be used for
classification and description. That part of the soil sample
collected in a brass tube will be stored at approximately 4 C for
transport to the laboratory.
1,2 soil Classification
As the samples are obtained in the field, they are classified by
the geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System, (USCS) . Representative portions of the samples are then
returned to the laboratory for further examination and for
verification of the field classification.
1, 3 Soil sample screening Portable Photoionization Detector
Method
After soil sample jars have been brought to ambient temperature,
the head space of the soil sample jars will be screened with a
portable photoionization detector equipped with a 10. 2 eV lamp
calibrated to benzene for direct reading in ppm. The sample jar
lid will be opened and the detector probe immediately placed
within the head space of the jar. The highest observed reading
will be recorded.
2 .o ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES
All soil samples submitted to the laboratory will be analyzed for
BTEX, TPH, and total lead using EPA Methods 8020, 8015 (modified)
and 7421, respectively. Ground water samples submitted to the
laboratory will be analyzed for the same petroleum hydrocarbon
constituents as the soil samples using EPA Methods 524 . 2/8240 ,
8270, 7421, respectively.
Papa: i
