1 <br /> ' SECTION 4 <br /> SITE-SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY <br /> PLAN <br /> ' This section describes the potential health and safety hazards and <br /> appropriate procedures to be followed to prevent injury or chemical <br /> ' exposure during the storage tank closure activities. <br /> Significant site-specific hazards anticipated during tank emptying, <br /> tank removal, and groundwater and soil sampling include the <br /> ' following. <br /> Underground utilities; <br /> ' • Heavy construction equipment (backhoes); <br /> • Unstable excavations; <br /> • Motor traffic; <br /> ' • Heat stress; and <br /> Exposure to petroleum products and/or vapor. <br /> ' The first five of these are classified as physical hazards, while <br /> exposure to petroleum products is considered to be a chemical <br /> ' hazard. Physical and chemical hazards are described separately <br /> below. <br /> Physical Hazards <br /> Utilities and the underground storage tanks will be located prior to <br /> the initiation of field work. The utilities will be located and marked <br /> ' on the ground surface by Underground Service Alert. The actual <br /> location of the tanks will be marked on the ground surface through <br /> the specialized services of Spectrum Environmental Services. <br /> ' Worker safety in the vicinity of heavy equipment, such as the <br /> backhoe, will be stressed on the job site. Safety procedures will <br /> consist of keeping the personnel working in the vicinity of the <br /> backhoe to a minimum, and making the operator aware of personnel <br /> that are present within his work zone.
