Jeff Wong [EH]
From: Kasey Foley[EH]
Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 8:59 AM
To: Jeff Wong [EH]
Cc: Willy Ng [EH]; Raymond von Flue [EH]; Garrett Backus [EH]
Subject: FW: Results/EDD/Invoice - LINDEN UST Removal (1403251) - State Route
Jeff,
I just got off the phone with Clem and he said the landfill wants a letter from the lab explaining the samples. I told him if
the landfill accepts the tank and the explanation from lab then we will allow it to go to the landfill as non-hazardous.
Kasey
From: Goewert, Clemens@DOT [mailto:clemens.goewert@dot.ca gov]
Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2014 8:04 AM
To: Kasey Foley [EH]
Subject: RE: Results/EDD/Invoice - LINDEN UST Removal (1403251) - State Route
Kasey:
The initial analysis was made on a composite from several samples collected from the tank.
Bob Kimball found during the sampling that the bottom of the tank is highly deteriorated, even though the top
of the tank makes the tank appear to be intact.
The initial analytical results indicated lead, copper, iron, etc. which did not make sense that the drilling mud in
the tank would have the constituents.
The lab was then instruct to prepare a new composite sample, an make certain that no metal pieces or rust
from the tank were in that sample. This recomposited sample was then analyzed for total lead. This sample
indicates that the material has non-hazardous lead concentrations.
These metal concentration from the initial analysis is from the tank and not tank contents. The tank probably
was made from a low quality steel from the 1930s Or 40s. I remember seeing similar results in the water
samples from a couple of water supply wells that I long ago. The well casing was attacked by iron bacteria
and gave similar results.
We would like to dispose of the tank contents as non-hazardous, and recycle the steel from the tank.
Please call me if you have questions.
Clem Goewert
CALTRANS
Environmental Planner Paleontology and Hazardous Waste Group
855 M Street
Fresno,CA 93721
1
