WEISS ASSOCIATES VMU
2) The vaults will be sealed during drilling.
3) Color detector tubes will be kept on hand and used if vapors are suspected.
4) Respirators with organic vapor and particulate cartridges suitable for screening
out dust and ethylene glycol vapor will be kept on hand and used if the color
detector tubes indicate the presence of vapors. An OVA will also be used to
monitor the ambient air for organic vapors. If the color detector tubes or the
OVA indicate that vapors over 700 ppm. (70% of the capacity of the organic
vapor cartridges) are present, work will be stopped until workers don full-face
fresh air breathing apparatus in lieu of a respirator (Level B protection) or
until the vapor concentrations decrease to safer levels.
5) No extreme heat capable of decomposing any of the chemicals will be
generated.
1.1.6 Dermal Hazards
All the chemicals possibly encountered present potential dermal hazards. Therefore,
protective clothing and gloves will be worn by workers to prevent dermal contact.
1.2 PHYSICAL HAZARDS
1.2.1 Heat Stress
Heat stress can be caused by exposure to high temperatures, wearing protective
clothes, and physical exertion. Because protective clothing is worn during physical
exertion when working on the drill rig, workers may need to take periodic breaks.
During these breaks, the workers should leave the work area and ventilate their protective
clothing. A beverage containing replacement salts, such as Gatorade, should be consumed
as needed.
WP1F:\ALL\331DWG\331R1AP8.DOC:74-331-00:V1.036 Page 4
