CENTRAL '...LEY REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CCIROL BOARD
INSPECTION REPORT
13 May 1986
DISCHARGER : Amador Chemical Company
LOCATION & COUNTY : Stockton, San Joaquin County
CONTACTS ) : Victor Naylor, Vice President
INSPECTION DATE : 26 August 1986
INSPECTED BY : Richard Azevedo, Gary Reents
ACCOMPANIED BY : Victor Naylor, Vice President ,
I
OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS i
On 26 August 1985, Gary Reents and I inspected Amador Chemical to assess the
site' s potential impact on water quality. No waste discharge requirements have
been adopted for the facility.
Our inspection consisted of a meeting with Messers. Naylor and Drew followed by
a tour of their disposal facilities. In light of current regulations and to
limit their future liability, Amador Chemical will abandon their wastewater
ponds and contain all wastewater in a 5,000 gallon above-ground tank.
Amador Chemical , in operation since 1977, compounds powdered and liquid deter-
gents, industrial cleaners and repackages solvents, alcohols and thinners for
resale. Chemicals handled in the past included:
Ethyl Alcohol Ethylene Gycol Monobutyl Ether
Ethyl Acetate Isopropyl Alcohol
Methanol Methyl Ethyl Ketone
Methylene Chloride 1,1,1-Trichloroethane
Ethylene Glycol Acetone
Diacetone Alcohol Hexane
Stoddard Solvent Toluene
Two distinct waste streams are present: stormwater runoff to unlined ponds 4, 5
and 6, and wastewater disposal to lined ponds 1, 2, and 3. Pond 1 is concrete
lined, while ponds 2 and 3 are polyethylene and clay lined, respectively. All
ponds were dry at the time of the inspection.
Prior to November 1984, wastewater was stored in pond 3 and pumped to ponds 1
and 2 for evaporation/infiltration. During late 1984 - early 1985, wastewater
was stored in an above-ground tank and discharged to pond 1 for disposal .
Currently, wastewater is stored in an above-ground tank and recycled as a drum
wash solution. Mr. Naylor stated that land disposal of the wastewater has been
eliminated, although plans for future disposal of the "drum wash solution" have
not been formalized.
A
rR EVIEWED aY:
