Three Types of Spills
There are three main types of spills.
Small
• Less than 5 gallons (19 liters).
• Usually happen at the fuel islands.
• Usually caused by customers over filling their tanks at the fuel islands or by small
leaks from the hoses, nozzles, and other equipment.
• These are the most common type of spills you will deal with.
La rg e
• Spills that are more than 25 gallons (95 liters).
• Can happen anywhere on the property.
• Typically caused by leaking fuel tanks on large trucks. Sometimes these leaks are
caused when two vehicles collide.
• These types of spills happen less frequently than the small spills, but can have more
of a detrimental effect to the environment so must be handled correctly.
Unknown
• These can be large or small.
• Usually don't involve Flying J fuel equipment but substances brought onto the
property by trucking customers.
• Usually caused by chemicals not being contained properly, drums falling off the back
of a truck, etc.
• These types of spills are very rare.
3
