0
1 - LEVI N E•FRICKE
to DOHS policy, the'TTLC for DDT is applied to the sum of all
DDT-related compounds. ;
1 Arsenic and lead were detected in all of 'thegfield area compo-
sited samples. Reported arsenic concentrations ranged from 4 to
13 ppm, and lead concentrations ranged €rom 4): to 8 ppm (Figure
4) . These concentrations are well belowTTLC concentrations, and
are within naturally occurring ranges (L.,ndsa`y, 1979) . Mercury
was not detected in any of the composited samples analyzed.
Chlorinated herbicides and organophosphate compounds were not
detected by the analyses conducted in field area composited
samples.
12.2 Northeast Area !j
4 Pesticides
The insecticide DDT and related compounds were detected in .the
composite of the three samples collected !1at approximately one
foot below grade from three locations west of? the Quonset hut,
outside the entrance to the but (Q-1, Q-i, Q-;3) (Figure 5) . The
compounds 4,4-DDT and 2,4-DDT were detected in the composited
sample at concentrations of 0.4 and 0.096 ppm!,, respectively. The
compounds 4,4-DDD and 4,4-DDE were detected in the sample at con-
centrations of 0.013 and 0.13 ppm, respectively. Chlorinated
herbicides were not detected in the compo'sited sample. Arsenic
was detected at a concentration of 5.6 ppm; lead at 15 ppm, and
mercury at the detection limit of 0.2 ppm. These concentrations
are all below the TTLC for these metals (1j. Marshack, 1986) , and
are within naturally occurring ranges for< soi:ls (Lindsay, 1979) .
Because ,.the sum of the concentrations ofthe..DDT-related com-
pounds detected in this sample was near the cumulative TTLC of 1
ppm for these compounds, the individual portions of the compo-
sited sample that had been held by the laboratory were
subsequently analyzed. The results indicated! that one of the
individual samples, Q-1 (one foot below grade) , contained concen-
trations of DDT and related compounds above the TTLC (1.6 ppm of
4,4-DDT; 0.42 ppm of 2,4-DDT; 0.49 ppm of 4, 4{f,-DDE; and 0.22 ppm
of 4, 4-DDD) ; the sum concentrations of DDT-related compounds in
the sample is 2.73 ppm. The total concentrations of DDT-related
compounds in the other three individual samples were 0. 193 and
0. 22, considerably below the TTLC value. I'The insecticide Diel-
drin was also detected in Q-3 (one foot below'hgrade ) at 0. 13
ppm. The TTLC for this compound is 8 ppm' (J.'yMarshack, 1986) .
jTo assess the areal extent of affected so ils,';` several additional
samples were collected in the vicinity of,' Q-1'Iand analyzed for
DDT and related compounds. The compounds, 4,44 DDT and 4 ,4-DDE
were detected in 'Q-5 at 0. 014 and 0.012 ppm, respectively. The
-17_
k
