Geof0 icafTechnics Inc. S Page 2
Fonzia
' SGWI Report
Project No.: 774.2
June 10, 1999
' 1. Former Storage Area
The former Storage Area has motor oil in the soil at approximately 12 feet in the central
portion of the excavated area and at about 9 feet bgs around the margins of the
' excavation. Soil and water samples collected from under the storage area show that:
■ Motor oil is the primary contaminant present in several of the borehole soil and
groundwater samples.
' - Motor oil in the soil ranged from 1.5 to 7.3 mg/Kg in the vertical profile in
GP-14.
- Motor oil in the groundwater ranged froml30 ug/L @ 12 feet,ND @ 19 & 26
' feet, and 73 ug/L @ 33 feet in GP-14.
■ Trace concentrations of Ethylbenz ne & Toluene are present in the shallow water
samples of GP-1 & 2.
■ Moderate concentration of Phenol was found in two soil samples, GP-14@12' & GP-
15@12'.
■ Trace concentration of motor oil ano low concentration of Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate
is present in the 33 foot water sample in GP-14.
2. Under the Warehouse
The diesel and motor oil contamination found in the soil under the Warehouse appears to
be caused from work activity prior to Warehouse construction. Since contamination is
' under the warehouse, it was not addressed in the 1995 cleanup work discussed above.
However, both the soil and groundwater test data suggests that this contamination is
minimal in extent and concentration, and is encapsulated by the warehouse.
Further investigation of the Phenol and Bis(2-ethylhexyl)Phthalate revealed the following:
1. Cross contamination of this sample is probably not the source of this chemical found in
this sample for the following reason:
' ■ V&W Drilling uses low-density polyethylene tubing to collect the water samples via
the Wattera hand pumping system. According to the manufacture, this material does
not contain plasticizers. The dii1ler does use latex rubber gloves for cross
' contamination and cleanliness purposes. This material probably contains several
Phthalate compounds. However, it is unlikely either through casual contact or if a
piece of glove had become entrained in the sample that phthalates would have
solublized in the sample.
' ■ BSK Laboratories used glass fiber filters and glass funnels and containers to handle
these samples in the process of preparing them for analysis and analyzing them by
EPA method 8270.
' 2. Off site locations with known contam nation may be a possible sources of the Bis(2-
ethylhexyl) Phthalate found at 33 feet b s. Two sites in the immediate vicinity have been
shown to contain PNA compounds.
' ■ PG&E - adjoins this Property to the east and is located immediately east of the rail
road, which borders the east of this property.
■ Former Mobile Bulk Storage Facility— is located northeast of this Property. Testing
performed at the site in 1993 show-.d the presence of 2-ethylhexyl Phthalate in the
' groundwater.
