ame&
L4.0 AIR SPARGING PILOT TEST
AS is the process of injecting air directly into groundwater. AS is used to remediate impacted
groundwater and soil beneath the water table by volatilizing contaminants and creating aerobic
conditions to enhance natural biodegradation. Contaminants that are volatilized are typically
captured in the vadose using SVE techniques.
The following section describes the rationale and approach.for implementing the AS pilot test
at the Site, including baseline sampling, monitoring, pilot test procedures, and analysis.
4.1 RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the AS pilot test is to determine if AS can be successfully implemented
to remediate petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil and groundwater at the Site. The data
collected during the test will be qualitatively evaluated to determine if air can be sufficiently
injected to volatilize contaminants in groundwater and to increase dissolved oxygen
concentrations such that conditions in the subsurface change from anaerobic to aerobic. If the
results support the use of AS at the Site, the pilot test data will be used to develop full scale
design parameters, including well spacing, injection flow rates, injection pressure, and ROI.'
Specific design parameters objectives of the AS-pilot test include the following:
• Determine the ROI of an AS well;
* Collect data to e a v lua e the air pressure ressure and air flow characteristics at the location .
of the AS well; and
• Collect data to evaluate the extent and time delay for groundwater mounding and .
subsequent subsidence that may result from air injection (groundwater mounding
transition time)to determine sparge cycles (on/off operation of the AS well).
4.2 PRE-FIELD ACTIVITIES
Pre-field activities will include development of a health and safety plan, permitting and Site
access, and underground utility clearance.
4.2.1 Permitting and Site Access
AMEC does not anticipate any permitting required for this pilot scale test. As part of the
pre-field effort, field work will be coordinated with,Caltrans personnel.
4.3 PILOT TEST EQUIPMENT
The air injection system will consist primarily of an AS injection well, tracer gas manifold,
compressor, generator, and ancillary equipment including a'pressure relief valve, flow control
AMEC Geomatrix, Inc.
P:\Project\14000s\14443_Cahrans\TO 10\11000_PLANS\AS WP_March 2010WS WP.doc 12
