Norwood
13 January 1997
Page 3
Collection of Soil and Groundwater Samples
After the soil sample is retrieved from the split-spoon sampler, the ends of the middle sample tube
will be sealed using Teflon sheets secured by plastic caps. The sample will then be labeled to
indicate a unique sample number, the date and time collected, and the sampler's identification.
Labeled samples will be placed into clean Zip-lock bags and stored in an ice-chilled cooler for
preservation during transport to a State-certified laboratory for analysis. The end tubes will be used
for sample logging classified using the Unified Soil Classification System and qualitative field
screening purposes.
Field screening of soil samples will be conducted by monitoring the headspace of sealed plastic
bags containing soil samples for the presence of organic vapors. Organic vapors will be measured
by a photo-ionization detector equipped with an 11.8 eV bulb. Results of the headspace monitoring
and the visual inspections are present on the attached soil boring logs.
After the wells are installed and the grout has been allowed to set for at least 48 hours, they will be
developed by hand bailing and surging until the water appears free of sediments. The new
monitoring wells will be included in the next quarterly sampling event conducted by Smith
Environmental.
Storage of Drill Cutting and Purge Water
The drill cuttings, development water and purge water will be stored in drums at the site for
subsequent disposal. After receiving the results of the laboratory analyses, we can advise you on
the options that are available for disposing of the cuttings and pumped water.
DEEP SOIL BORING
A deep soil boring will be drilled to assess the vertical extent of the shallow aquifer. The soil
boring will be drilled according to the same procedures as the soil borings for the monitoring wells,
except that beginning at a depth of 20 feet below the ground surface, soil samples will be collected
continuously. Drilling will continue until a competent clay layer is located. No soil samples will
be collected for laboratory analysis from this soil boring.
LABORATORY ANALYSES
The soil samples selected for analysis will be delivered with completed chain-of-custody forms to
Excelchem Environmental Labs in Roseville, a State-certified laboratory. Samples will be
analyzed for halogenated hydrocarbons by EPA 8010 with detection limits of 0.005 mg/Kg.
