PROCEDMS
Groundwater monitoring wells will be developed using hand operated bailers or submersible
pumps. All well development equipment is cleaned by washing or steam cleaning prior to
being used. Prior to beginning well development activities, the total depth of the well will be
measured and compared to the designed total depth. A water sample collected at the free
water surface will be collected using a clear Teflon bailer and visually inspected for the
presence of free petroleum product. Using the measured level of water in the well, the
volume of water in the well casing will be calculated.
Well development begins by using a bailer of slightly smaller diameter than the monitoring
well casing to gently surge and remove water from the well. The turbidity and quantity of
sediment in the removed water will be constantly visually noted. As turbidity and sediment
in the removed water will decrease, the rate of surging and removal of water from the well
will increased. A minimum of ten casing volumes of water, as calculated in the field, will be
removed from the well. Well development will be determined to be complete once water
removed is observed to be free of sediment, turbidity is reduced to lowest levels and/or field
mea-,urements of water pH, electrical conductivity, and temperature are consistent.
All fluids generated by well development activities will be collected and placed into
appropriate 55-gallon capacity drums. Disposal alternatives for the collected water will be
determined on the basis of laboratory results of groundwater samples collected after well
development. When appropriate, collected water will be disposed at the site.
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
This document presents groundwater monitoring well sampling procedures. These procedures
are for use at sites where only the presence of gasoline, diesel, or motor oil is of concern.
These procedures are general sampling procedures, specific procedures for each site will be
discussed with the project manager.
G=ajj Sampliple Procedares
1. All chemical sampling, handling, and storage will be in accordance with U. S.
,Environmental Protection Agency and State of California State Water Resources
Control Board guidelines. Regional Water Quality Control Board, County, and. City
guidelines will also be checked prior to the initiation of any sampling project.
2. A written field log of all sampling activities will be maintained.
3. in the geld, all filled sample containers will be properly sealed, labeled and identified.
Written on the label will be the date, the sampling time, a sample identification
number, the name-of the sampler, and the project name.
nanz.ata A-3
