k'g KLEINFELDER
clean pad. For a location of the area see Plate 2 and for a detail map of the excavation area and
confirmation soil sampling locations see Plate 3.
The excavation of the material, including sump, concrete and soil was conducted by RAH
Environmental, in Loomis, California. The soil was stockpiled adjacent to the area onto
visqueen prior to removal. Kleinfelder estimates approximately 40 cubic yards of material was
excavated from the sump/steam clean area and subsequently removed from the site on April 6
and 7, 2004 to Forward Landfill (Class II landfill) located in Stockton, California. The
excavation was backfilled with onsite material located north of the excavation. Manifest records
were prepared by RAH Environmental. Copies of the manifest records are located in
Appendix C.
The excavation was square shaped and measured approximately 12 by 20 feet in area and ranged
from 2.5 to 4 feet deep. The deepest part of the excavation was located near the sump area. The
excavation included the removal of the sump, adjacent nearby area, and steam clean pad located
north and east of the sump. The excavation was extended north and east based on a band of
discolored soil noted at a depth of about 1 to 2 feet bgs. Trace amounts of debris including
g asphalt, glass, and rubber was noted in this band. Based on the noted depth, this material appears
to have been previously sampled during Kleinfelder's previous assessment conducted in October
of 2002. Although only a slight organic/petroleum-like odor was noted, discolored soil remained
in the northern sidewall of the excavation.
k Six confirmation discrete soil samples were collected from within the excavation (see Plate 3).
Four were collected from sidewalls and two from the bottom of the excavation. The
confirmation soil samples were collected at depths ranging from 1 %2 to 4 feet bgs. The soil
samples were collected by slide hammering a 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long stainless steel tube
into the soil.
Sample Collection and Handlin¢
The stainless sampler and sample tubes were cleaned between locations with a Liquinox®
(laboratory-grade detergent) wash followed by a potable water and distilled water rinse. The
stainless steel tubes used for collecting the samples were then sealed following collection of the
sample with Teflon® sheeting and tight-fitting plastic end caps. After collection, the soil
j samples were labeled, logged on a chain-of-custody form, and immediately stored in an iced
cooler pending transportation to the analytical laboratory.
The soil samples were transported under chain-of-custody control to Kleinfelder's office and
then transported by courier in a chilled container to Alpha Analytical Laboratory, Inc. (Alpha) of
Sparks, Nevada. The chain-of-custody form was signed by each individual who handled the
samples, including the sampler and the receiving employee at Alpha Analytical. Alpha is
certified by the State of California to perform the analyses requested. The samples were
analyzed on a standard 5 to 10 working day turnaround schedule for completion.
t
i
42747.T03 /ST04R882 Page 6 of 9
Copyright 2004,Kleinfelder, Inc.
