Tests have shown that this self
~` seaHng capability of the BAT' septa is maintained after hundreds of punctures.
The initial fluid sample collected at a given location is considered a system purge. A number
of subsequent samples will be collected once Cie probe is in place at the desired depth and
purged. The BATTM system can thus be used as a permanent groundwater monitoring point
by leaving the probe assembly and riser pipe in the ground and sampling periodically; or it
can be installed repeatedly at different locations. In case the groundwater surface drops, as
is common in California in the last five years, the CPT rig can be mobilized and a permanent
BATrN probe installation can be driven deeper until it is below the current groundwater
surface.
The BAT'groundwater samples will be collects: using 35-m1 glass sample vials.
To reduce the risk of personnel exposure to possible hazardous substances, all downhole
equipment will be automatically-decontaminated using a specially designed enclosed chamber
f •
.` underneath the rig containing scrubbers and hot water spray nozzles. As the string of CPT
push pipe (or BATm riser pipe)is being pulled out of the ground, it will be passed through
this chamber before being handled by personnel inside the cone penetrometer rig.
Pressurized hot water will be supplied by a steam cleaner to feed the chamber's spray
nozzles. All rinsate will be contained inside the chamber, andum
p ped out to a 55-gallon
drum for disposal. Approximately one drum will be filled every two days on site.
2.4 AIR MONITORING DURING TESTING OF SAMPLING
Ambient air will be monitored during all testing and sampling activities. An organic vapor
analyzer(OVA)will be used to monitor concentrations of total organic compounds in the
breathing space at worker chest level. Air monitoring concentrations will be recorded on the '!
" sampling logs. If sustained ambient air concentrations exceed 5 ppm above background
0:191503M0119.0123SL 6
»
.t
