MIS
"v
w r:
R.
. 3.5 SA-APLING HANDLING, PACKAGING, AND SHIPPING
T All samples will be packaged carefully to avoid breakage or contamination, and will be
.. shipped to the Iaboratory at proper temperatures. The following sample packaging
requirements will be followed:
o Sample bottle lids will not be mixed. All sample lids will stay with the
original containers.
o The sample volurne level can be marked by placing the top of the label
at the appropriate sample height, of marked with a grease pencil. This
procedure will help the laboratory to determine if any leakage occurred
during shipment. The label should not cover any bottle preparation
QA/QC marks.
o All sample bottles will be wrapped in bubble pack and placed in plastic
bags to minimize the potential for contamination and breakage during
shipment. Soil samples contained in brass liners will be placed in
plastic bags. OVA sample containers are usually placed in plastic bags
filled with activated carbon to absorb any organics that may volatilize.
' o All samples will be cooled unless "no cooling" has been specified. The
sample containers will be packed in bubble-pack-lined styrofoam
coolers. The coolers will then be filled with ice within zip-lock bags.
Wo Empty space in the cooler will be filled in with inert packing material.
Locally obtained material (sawdust, sand, etc.) will not be used.
o The chain-of-custody recon^'-.,vill be placed in a plastic bag and taped to
the bottom of the cooler lid,
o All shipping containers will be locked or custody-sealed for shipment to
the laboratory. Procedures include use of a custody seal wrapped
across filament tape that is wrapped around the package at least twice.
The custody seal is then folded over and stuck to itself so that access to
the package is limited to cutting the filament tape or breaking the seal.
The seal will be signed before the sample is shipped.
_ ` ' 14
