2
Petroleum hydrocarbons have been measured during the investigation as total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline (USEPA Method 8015, modified) and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds (USEPA Method 8020) MTBE has been
included in laboratory analyses conducted since June 1996 TPH is a mixture of hydrocarbons
with no set toxicity value Benzene is a known carcinogen with an estabhshed MCL for
drinking water of 1 microgram per liter (gg/L) Toluene, ethylbenzene, d ylene have
various acute and chronic effects with exposure. The MCLs established f th compounds
are 150 µg/L, 700 gg/L, and 1,750 µg/L, respectively The curre sta acts level for
MTBE is 35 gg/L
SITE HYDROGEOLOGY
The site is underlain by interbedded clays, silts, d s to depth of 46 feet bgs, the
total depth explored Depth-to-water measurements sho ignifi t seasonal variation, from
approximately 10 to 17 feet bgs The direction of groun ater ow is to the northeast,
towards the Swenson Park Golf Course
PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS IN N7L
v
Petroleum hydrocarbons have fou oil during the investigation The
highest concentrations of TPH as gasoline d oil have been detected in samples
collected between 15 and bgs,in the a of?seasonal water-table fluctuation. Although
no holes were detec in e s removed in 1989, the former tanks and pump islands
appear to be the p ary ce of s rface contamination A graphic summary of maximum
concentrations of pe leum bons in soil for all monitoring wells, soil borings, and
remediation wells is sho n in figure 2 A summary of analytical results from soil samples
collec all site inv tigations is included in Table 1.
