CRA employees are prohibited from wor mg in environments with concentrations equal to or eeding 500 ppmv on the PID even with
air-purifying respiratory protection.
Projects requiring work in environments of 500 ppmv or more will be evaluated on a case by case basis, and site-specific procedures must
be approved in advance by the Company Safety Officer. Personnel will require special certified training. Typically this work will be
performed by others.
Safe Work Practices
Safe work practices for work around benzene will consist of.
• Efforts to control inhalation exposures through source control methods.
• Work practices to remove employees from higher-exposure areas.
• Upgrades in respiratory protection.
• Personal hygiene practices to control inadvertent ingestion.
Protective Equipment and Respirators
Upgrades in respiratory protection will be made based on PID readings,or at employee request, with the intent of maintaining
exposures below the Cal-OSHA Action Level for Benzene, and as low as feasible. Where respirators are used,tight-fitting respirators
with organic vapor cartridges will be utilized. Respiratory protection use must be in accordance with CRA's Respiratory Protection
Program.
Protective Clothing and Equipment
Personal protective clothing and equipment shall be wom where appropriate to prevent eye contact and limit dermal exposure to non-
aqueous-phase-phase liquid(NAPL)benzene. Protective clothing and equipment shall be provided by the employer at no cost to the
employee and the employer shall ensure appropriate use.
Training Requirements
All employees who may be exposed to benzene on thejob must receive training specific to benzene exposure,in accordance with the Cal-
OSHA Benzene Standard. This training is typically accomplished during the Hazwoper-required training.
Signs and Postings
Projects where benzene-contaminated materials may be contacted should post Proposition 65 warning signs(these are typically
already in place at gas station sites). If exposures may exceed the PEL,the Regulated Area sign described in the Benzene Standard
must be posted.
