CRA Chemical Safety Sheet 46
Hydrogen Peroxide
CRA may use hydrogen peroxide to remediate sites. Typically dilute solutions less than 8%hydrogen peroxide are used because of
transportation limits(see the hydrogen peroxide transportation section below). Instances requiring higher concentrations or greater than
1,000 pounds or 120 gallons of hydrogen peroxide require special transportation arrangements.
Hazards
• Reacts with anything organic
• Incompatible with iron,steel,brass,bases,acids,lime,ammonia
• Personal bums
• Ignition of combustible organic material
• Pressure bursts caused by contamination or lack of ventilation.
Storage
Hydrogen peroxide is typically only used for one-time,single day applications for in-situ remediation work. Make efforts to avoid onsite
storage when possible. If hydrogen peroxide must be stored on site:
• Plan ahead to minimize volume and concentration needed to be stored.
• Use dedicated equipment for handling and storing material.
• Keep storage area and handling equipment clean. Even small amounts of contamination can cause reaction.
• Provide adequate ventilation both for the storage area and for the container itself(pressure release valves,etc.).
• If material is to be stored onsite, secondary containment of compatible materials must be provided.
• All containers must be properly labeled.
Transportation
• Transporting<8%hydrogen peroxide in quantities less than 1,000 pounds or 120 gallons is not regulated by DOT(49
CFR.171-172)and therefore maybe transported by CRA employees in company vehicles. However, this should be done
only if onsite delivery by a vendor is not practical.
• CRA staff are prohibited from transporting hydrogen peroxide in greater than 8%solutions or if over 1,000 pounds or 120
gallons.
• Hydrogen peroxide in concentrations greater than 8%must be delivered to the site by qualified personnel.
Safety Equipment
Whenever working with hydrogen peroxide, the following PPE and equipment must be provided:
• safety shower
• 15-minute eye wash
• source of running water
• vinyl or rubber suit
• vinyl or rubber boots(no leather)
• with pants outside of boots
• goggles
plastic hard hat/face shield
• rubber or vinyl gloves
• water supply for rinsing spilled material or use in case of fire
Emergency Response
• In case of exposure to eyes, rinse immediately in eyewash for 15 minutes, and call 911.
• In case of exposure to skin, rinse with water immediately for 15 minutes, and call 911 if skin bum develops.
• When exposed to fumes, remove victim to fresh air and call 911.
• If swallowed, drink water but do not induce vomiting.
• In case of fire call 911 and only use water.
• Use water to rinse spilled material.
