Ms. Margaret Lagorio Project 797613
August 30, 1999
Page 2
Field Activities
Product Delivery Line, Dispenser, and UST Removal/Replacement and Verification
Soil Sampling
Pinnacle proposes to conduct the following scope of work associated with product
delivery line, dispenser, and UST removal and replacement, which includes verification
soil sampling activities.
Pinnacle will observe the removal of the existing product delivery lines and dispensers
and collect one soil sample every 20 linear feet and at corners, turns and connections
beneath the former product lines and one soil sample beneath each of the former
dispensers. Samples will also be collected from beneath the USTs which are to be
removed and replaced. Soil samples will be collected under the direction of the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Division representative. Soil samples will be
collected at approximately 1 foot below the former product lines and dispensers using 3-
inch-diameter handauger and hand-operated percussion sampling equipment. The
percussion sampler will be equipped with stainless steel sample tubes and will be driven
beyond the bottom of the handaugered borehole. The sample tube will be sealed with
Teflon® tape and plastic end caps and labeled with project number, sample designation,
and sampling date. The sample will be placed in an ice chest and logged on chain-of-
custody documentation. Sampling equipment will be decontaminated between sample
locations to prevent cross contamination of samples. UST samples will be collected from
beneath the center and each end of the USTs and as directed by the County representative
on site.
Verification soil samples will be submitted to a state-certified analytical laboratory for
analyses of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG) using U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Modified Method 8015; benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and _
total xylenes (BTEX) using USEPA Method 8020; oxygenates (methyl tert butyl etf
tertiary butyl alcohol, di-isopropyl ether, ethyl tertiary butyl ether, tertiary amyl met
ether) using USEPA Method 8260; and total lead using USEPA Method 7420.
If groundwater is encountered in the UST excavation, a grab sample will be collected
analyzed for TPHG, BTEX, MTBE, and oxygenates using above-referenced methods.
Additional Excavation and Soil Sampling
If warranted, Pinnacle will observe limited overexcavation in the vicinity of the forruci
product lines, dispensers and UST locations. If field evidence indicates hydrocarbons
CP1E:1ARCO\60801REPORT516080P101.DOC-951sg:1 t'
