E
'IT111RD-QUARTER 1995
QUARTERLY MONITORING REPORT.
 FORMER PUREGRO/BREA FACILITY
1905 NORTH BROADWAY AVENUE
RECEIVED .-
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA OCT 191995
SIERRA-PACIFIC PROJECT NO. 94-055.04
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
j PERMIT/SERVICES
` 1.0 BACKGROUND '
Union Oil Company of California (dba Unocal) authorized Sierra-Pacific Groundwater
Consultants, Inc. (Sierra-Pacific) to undertake a ground-water investigation at an agricultural-
chemical (ag-chem) facility located at 1905 North Broadway Avenue, Stockton (Figures 1 and
r
2). Before 1992, the six-acre ag-chem facility had been operated by various companies,
including PureGro Company and Brea Agricultural Services, Inc. Crop Production Services
(CPS), the current operator, bought the facility from PureGro Company (Unocal) in 1992.
In the mid-1980's, traces of 1,2-DCP (aka propylene dichloride and 1,2-dichloropropane) and
other petro-chemicals were being detected in ground-water samples from east Stockton and
other parts of the San Joaquin Valley. The State Water Resources Control Board then focused
Jits regulatory attention on ag-chem distributors and manufacturers, and environmental cleanup
work began at the PureGro/Brea site. By 1993, traces of 1,2-DCP and nitrates were being
' detected in ground-water samples collected from four new monitoring wells at the site.
 P g
F
` In October 1994, Sierra-Pacific installed two additional monitoring wells,approximately 300 feet
west of the PureGro/Brea site, to determine if ag-chemicals have been transported down-
gradient from the site by ground-water movement (Figure 3). Monitoring well MW-5 was
installed five feet west of the centerline of Sutro Avenue, approximately 40 feet north of Lewis
Street. MW-6 was installed five feet west of the centerline of Sutro Avenue, approximately five
feet north ofCharles Street. On September 18, 1995, Sierra-Pacific measured the water level
and collected water samples at a solitary monitoring well located at 1705 North Broadway
Avenue. The well (MW-11) is located about 200 feet south of the former PureGro/Brea site
(Figure 3). Additional project information is available in earlier consultant reports, the titles
of which are listed in Section 6.0 of this report.
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants 1
