As of Thursday, May 26, 2016, 385 18-yard bins of impacted material have been
removed from the release site under the oversight of Regional Water Quality Control
Board staff. The soil is being removed in 20 foot sections at a time, with the excavation
reaching approximately 12 feet below grade and 7 feet below the depth of the piping. As
part of the excavation work, a 90 foot section of an adjacent pipeline that is no longer in
service had to be removed. An 80 foot section of the active pipeline where the release
occurred has been removed and replaced. Testing of the replacement pipeline is
ongoing under the direction of the State Fire Marshal's Office.
- y:yul
Excavation and cleanup activities continue from May 20, 2016 Shell Oil pipeline spill
On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, EHD staff reached out to the community in the area of the
spill to provide current information and to offer a point of contact to address any
questions or concerns they may have. Today, the EHD learned that the removal of the
visually impacted soil is almost complete and no wells in the vicinity are threatened.
EHD's ongoing mission is to protect public health and the environment, and will
continue to monitor the situation and work with Alameda County and State officials to
ensure all public health concerns are addressed.
For more information contact Lisa Medina at the EHD, at (209) 468-3455 or (209) 468-
3420.
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
