Excavated materials shall be prevented from falling back into the excavation. <br /> r° Spoils should be placed no closer than 2 feet from the edge of the excavation. <br /> 7. . <br /> Work which is conducted *Min the excavation should be under the direct <br /> supervision of a qualified person who is capable of modifying the shoring or <br /> sloping system. <br /> 8. A convenient and safe means of egress shall be provided for employees working <br /> within an excavation 4-feet deep or greater. This may consist of a stairway, ladder, <br /> or ramp located within 25 feet of lateral travel. <br /> 9. Any employee working in the vicinity of an excavator shall not be in a position <br /> where that employee might fall into contact with the moving parts of that excavator. <br /> Employees shall also be wearing a reflective vest. <br /> 10. An adequate means of water drainage shall be implemented to reduce the <br /> likelihood of run-off entering the excavation. This shall hold true during the rainy <br /> season. If the accumulation of water could pose a hazard to employees, the <br /> situation should be controlled prior to resumption of operations. <br /> 11. All shoring systems shall incorporate the soil specifications and conditions for that <br /> particular site. The installation of shoring systems shall be conducted in such a <br /> way that the employee is property protected from the potential of cave-ins. <br /> Additionally, the removal of the system shall follow the same requirement. <br /> 12. If the excavation exceeds 20 feet, or if an alternative shoring, sloping, or benching <br /> system is utilized, a civil engineer currently registered in California shall prepare <br /> detailed plans showing the materials and methods to be utilized (Appendix A). <br /> 13. The detailed plans in #12 above, shall be available for inspection at the site. <br /> 14. Shoring shall be installed in accordance with Table 1-6 located within Appendix B, <br /> or as detailed in plans and specifications prepared by a State of California <br /> Registered Civil Engineer in accordance with engineering criteria within Appendix <br /> A. <br /> 15. If protective shields, (i.e., trench shields) are to be utilized for the protection of <br /> employees within an excavation, a civil engineer registered in California must <br /> prepare the necessary calculations and designs prior to the use of such <br /> equipment. <br /> EX&TRNCH.POL/MG #2 <br />
