The following text describes the <br /> handling procedures for both soil and water samples. This includes specific information regarding: <br /> • Required materials <br /> • Sample containers <br /> • Preservation and collection <br /> • Identification <br /> • Labeling <br /> Chain-of-custody <br /> • Shipment <br /> 4.2.1 Required Materials <br /> The following materials, depending on specific task, will be used as appropriate when packing or <br /> ' shipping samples: <br /> • Appropriate sampling containers <br /> ' • Self-adhesive labels of sufficient quantity for the planned sampling activity(if self-adhesive <br /> labels are inappropriate for the sample containers, use tape, adhesive,twist ties or other fastening <br /> material as appropriate to securely aux the completed label to the sample containers). <br /> ' • Chain-of-custody records <br /> • Bubble wraps or appropriate packing materials <br /> • Sealable plastic bags <br /> 1 • Coolers or shipping boxes,appropriate quantity for sampling activity <br /> • Strapping/packing tape <br /> • Pen with indelible ink <br /> 4.2.2 Sample Containers <br /> Groundwater samples for analysis will be placed in containers provided by the laboratory. The <br /> appropriate container types will be selected depending on sampling method and choice of analytical tests. <br /> Containers provided by the laboratory are batch-certified as clean by the supplier. Container type and <br /> volumes should be documented on chain-of-custody records and the project field notes. <br /> 4.2.3 Sample Preservation and Filtering Procedures <br /> Sample preservation, handling and analysis will meet the specifications of Test Methods for Evaluating <br /> Soil Waste Physical/Chemical Methods, Third Edition(EPA, 1994)and updates, Publication Number <br /> SW-846(as amended),or an equivalent substitute. Preservation methods and preservatives for each of <br /> the proposed analytical methods will be as directed by the laboratory performing the analyses. The <br /> laboratory will supply sample containers with appropriate preservatives,with the type of preservative <br /> clearly labeled. The preservative will be documented on the sample labels,chain-of-custody, and project <br /> field log. <br /> Groundwater samples to be submitted for metals analysis will be filtered in the field. Groundwater <br /> samples on which metals analyses will be conducted should be filtered through a 0.45-micron filter into a <br /> sample container with appropriate preservatives,and then analyzed for dissolved metals. <br /> 5 <br />
