Activities during the quarter have included sampling for
dissolved hydrocarbons and monitoring of groundwater.
` Groundwater monitoring data collected in November and January,
'lie reveals a constantly fluctuating water elevation and gradient due
to changes in River stage (Tables 1 & 2) . The groundwater gradi-
.A ent maps (Figures 2, 3, & 4) shows an average gradient of 0.013
ft. /ft. , and varying from south to southeast.
Groundwater samples were collected from the three wells on Janu-
ary 7, 1991, for analyses of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
xylenes (BTEX) and total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and
diesel (TPHG & TPHD), by EPA methods 8020/8015. Applied Analyti-
cal (DOHS# 1211 ) performed the analyses of all samples. The
laboratory reports and chain--of-custody documentation are pre-
sented in Attachment ] . In your December 17, 1990, letter (point #4) you request-
ed some possible explanations of "contradictory results" obtained
from the water sample analyses.
