Section 5.0
Engineering Analyses and Recommendations
y
5.6 Additional Studies
_ As mentioned previously, removal of the soil and external hydrostatic forces within
the temporary excavation will remove lateral support for the pump station and wet
pit. A structural engineer should evaluate the impact and develop specific
conclusions and recommendations for these structures.
As described previously, our exploration borings encountered 10 to 15 feet of loose
sands and gravels near the base of the pump station. The field data we obtained
suggest that this layer is susceptible to liquefaction during a moderate'earthquake.
Liquefaction would lead to differential settlement of the pump station and associated
structures and piping that could interrupt operations for days or montihs as repairs,
are made. However, our field investigation program was not designed to gather the
additional data required to make a more detailed evaluation of the risk of liquefaction
and potential for damage. Therefore,we recommend the City consider performing'a
liquefaction study.
S
r
CDM camp Drerss=&McKee Ina 5-5
4:Q5W0 29248-GEO-74-ReoOrtlBrookside Pump Station,doc
