J.. L.01
O1 December 2006
AGE-NC Project No. 48-0440
L.
Excavated soil was screened for the presence of organic vapor using a using an organic vapor meter
(OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo Environmental 580, 10.0 eV,
calibrated to isobutylene). Based on OVM readings and field observations, excavated soil was
segregated into impacted soil and clean soil. Only soil exhibiting hydrocarbon odor or measurable
OVM readings was stockpiled for final disposal; the clean soil was used to backfill the excavation.
Approximately 1,300 cubic yards of soil was excavated as part of remedial action at the site. Based
on field observations (OVM readings, stained soil, hydrocarbon odors), impacted soil was
encountered between 8 feet and 15 feet bsg. Approximately 600 cubic yards of petroleum
hydrocarbon-impacted soil was excavated and removed from the site and approximately 700 cubic
. yards of clean overburden soil was removed and then used as backfill material. Figure 2 illustrates
the approximate location and lateral extent of the excavation.
La
2.3. EXCAVATION SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Soil samples were collected from the floor and sidewalls of the excavation, utilizing the excavator
bucket by AGE personnel.Excavation samples were collected using a metric soil sampling hammer
loaded with brass sleeves. Soil sample locations are illustrated on Figure 3.
Upon collection, the exposed ends of the sample sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and
sealed with tape. Each sample sleeve was properly labeled, placed in a chilled container under ice
and subsequently transported under chain-of-custody procedure to Cal Tech Environmental
Laboratory(CTEL),a State of California Department of Health Services(DHS)-certified laboratory.
Soil samples were analyzed for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) and as diesel (TPH-d) by EPA Method
,y 8015 Modified;
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylens(BTEX)and methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE)
by EPA Method 826013; and
L..
- 2.4. BACKFILLING OF EXCAVATION
On 01 and 05 June 2006, the excavation was backfilled using a combination of pea gravel, clean
native soil removed from the excavation and imported AIB baserock.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
f
