Your
concern was over the definition of the Produce Trim and Culls and if the operation required a
permit as a Transfer Station. I explained to you that the Produce Trim and Culls were not a waste
product and that it did not require a Transfer Station Permit. I also agreed to send you this letter
further explaining the Community Recycling & Resource Recovery, Inc. (CRRRI) Program and
how Safeway fits into it.
CRRRI began operations of it's 100 acre composting facility in Lamont, California in 1994. The
facility is a state of the art composting operation that is permitted by the Kern County LEA and
the California Integrated Waste Management Board. It accepts green waste, and produce trim
and culls from Von's, Ralph's, Save Mart, and Safeway supermarkets. The locations, start-up
dates and ton's/day are presented in Table 1.
Table 1: CRRRI Supermarket Produce Trim and Cull Program
Market Location Ton's/Da Start-Up Date
Von's El Monte 350 June 1994
Von's Santa Fe Springs 350 June 1995
Ralph's Carson 700 March 1995
Save Mart Merced 200 May 1996
Safeway Tracy 60 January 1999
5500 13urnside Road •Sebastopol, California 95472 • (707) 829-9331 • Fax (707) 829-2485 0 Printed on Pee,,eled Pdper
