a
1
Mr. Robert McClellan tj
San Joaquin County Environmental Health
February 19, 1999
Page 2
The Safeway program operates similar to the other Supermarket Programs. Unsold Produce
Trim and Culls are repackaged into wax corrugated boxes and shipped back to the markets
distribution centers on the same delivery trucks as a back haul. The Produce Trim and Cull is `
then unloaded from the delivery trucks and placed into a compactor trailer which is then
transported to the CRRRI facility where the material is further processed into compost. The
majority of the compost is then sold to commercial agriculture for use as
g a soil amendment to
grow crops which are then sold back
at the supermarkets. Portions of the compost is also bagged
and shipped back to the supermarkets for sale which efficiently closes the loop on this material,
The Produce Trim and Culls are. uotwa waste and the distribution center components of the
operation do not operate under Solid Waste Facilities Permit, nor are they required to do so. For
further clarification, I contacted Mr. Jeff Watson with the California Integrated Waste
Management Board who stated that"if the Produce Trim and Culls are not sold to consumers,
and the public has not taken possession of the material it is not waste it is
just unused product."
J
Mr Watson can be contacted at the following address oeffw@ciwmb.ca.gov) CIWMB, 8800 Cal
Center Drive, Sacramento, CA 95826 (916) 255-3850 if you have any questions.
Very truly your
ti
Dennis udd, REHS, REA
President
cc: Jeff Watson, CIWMB
Roger Vander Winde, CRRRI
i
Essenes Environmental, Inc.
0 Printed on Recycled Paper
L
