Human Health Screening Evaluation
Mountain House Development Site#6 January 18,2011
SAIC summed the health hazards for oral and dermal exposures (Table 11)with the hazards for
inhalation exposures (Table 12) to estimate the hazards across exposure routes for soil. Table 13
presents the sum of oral, dermal, and inhalation non-cancer hazards for soil.
5.3 AIR CONCENTRATIONS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FROM SOILS
SAIC calculated the estimated air concentrations of non-VOCs (as wind-blown, suspended-soil
particulates) and VOCs (following volatilization into ambient air)using equations provided by
Cal/EPA in the PEA Guidance Manual. Those equations are provided in sections 5.3.1 and
5.3.2.
5.3.1 Air Concentrations of Non-Volatile Organic Compounds from Soil
SAIC used the estimated ambient air concentration of non-VOCs as wind-blown, suspended-soil
particulates to estimate inhalation exposures, and subsequently inhalation risks and hazards from
exposures to those chemicals. The air concentration of non-VOCs in ambient air was calculated
using the following equation (PEA Guidance Manual, Figure 2.8):
Ca= Cs x(5E-08 kg/m3)
Where:
Ca= concentration in air, mg/m3
Cs = concentration is soil, mg/kg
Air concentrations of the following non-volatile PAHs were estimated using this equation
(Table 14):
• Acenaphthylene
• Benzo(a)anthracene
• Benzo(a)pyrene
• Benzo(b)fluoranthene
• Benzo(g,h,i)perylene
• Benzo(k)fluoranthene
• Chrysene
• Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene
• Fluoranthene
• Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene
• Phenanthrene
• Pyrene
5.3.2 Air Concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds from Soil
SAIC used the estimated air concentration of VOCs volatilized from on-site soils into ambient
air to estimate inhalation exposures, and subsequently inhalation hazards and risks from
exposure to those chemicals. The concentration of VOCs in ambient air from soils was
calculated using the following equation (PEA Guidance Manual, Figure 2.7):
Ca=Ei/99
8 of
1L.®
from sukin?to Solvtloas
